Author Guidelines

1. About the Journal

Indonesian Sports Justice Review is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal that publishes scholarly research on sports law, sports justice, dispute resolution, sports governance, athlete rights, sports regulation, and related interdisciplinary fields.

The journal is published quarterly in January, April, July, and October.

The journal welcomes original scholarly contributions from researchers, academics, legal practitioners, policymakers, sports organizations, and other scholars whose work falls within the journal's scope.

2. Types of Manuscripts

The journal accepts the following types of scholarly contributions:

  • Research Articles – original research presenting substantive theoretical, doctrinal, empirical, comparative, or interdisciplinary findings.
  • Review Articles – critical and comprehensive reviews of existing scholarship addressing significant issues within the journal's scope.
  • Case Analyses – critical analyses of judicial decisions, arbitral awards, disciplinary decisions, or other significant legal or regulatory developments.
  • Policy and Regulatory Analyses – scholarly analysis of legislation, regulations, policies, institutional frameworks, and regulatory developments.
  • Book Reviews – critical reviews of relevant scholarly books.
  • Editorials and Commentaries – scholarly discussions of emerging issues or significant developments relevant to sports law and justice.

The Editor-in-Chief reserves the right to determine the final classification of an accepted manuscript.

3. Originality and Exclusivity

Submitted manuscripts must be original and must not have been published previously in substantially the same form.

A manuscript submitted to Indonesian Sports Justice Review must not be simultaneously under consideration by another journal.

Authors must disclose any previous publication, preprint, conference paper, thesis, dissertation, working paper, or other publicly available material that substantially overlaps with the submitted manuscript.

The journal does not accept plagiarism, duplicate publication, redundant publication, fabricated data, falsified information, or other forms of academic or publication misconduct.

All manuscripts may undergo similarity screening before or during the editorial process.

4. Language

Manuscripts should be written in clear and academically appropriate English.

Authors whose first language is not English are encouraged to have their manuscripts carefully checked by a competent English-language editor or professional language service before submission.

Language editing does not guarantee acceptance and does not substitute for the journal's editorial and peer-review process.

5. Manuscript Submission

Manuscripts should be submitted through the journal's designated online submission system.

Authors must ensure that all required submission information and files are provided.

The corresponding author is responsible for communication with the journal during the submission, review, revision, and publication processes.

The submission should normally include:

  1. the complete manuscript;
  2. author information;
  3. affiliation and institutional information;
  4. ORCID iDs, where available;
  5. corresponding author's contact information;
  6. declarations required by the journal; and
  7. other supporting documents where applicable.

6. Manuscript Preparation

6.1 General Format

Authors should prepare manuscripts using the journal's official manuscript template, where available.

Unless otherwise specified in the template, manuscripts should generally follow these requirements:

  • paper size: A4;
  • readable academic font;
  • consistent font size and formatting;
  • appropriate line spacing;
  • consistent paragraph formatting;
  • page numbers where applicable;
  • clear section headings;
  • tables and figures numbered consecutively; and
  • references formatted consistently according to the journal's required citation style.

Authors should consult the journal's current manuscript template for detailed formatting requirements.

7. Recommended Manuscript Structure

Research Articles should generally include the following sections, although the structure may vary according to the nature of the research:

Title

The title should be concise, specific, informative, and accurately reflect the content of the manuscript.

Avoid unnecessary abbreviations, overly broad terminology, and statements that are not supported by the manuscript.

Author Information

Provide:

  • full name of each author;
  • institutional affiliation;
  • department or faculty where applicable;
  • city and country;
  • ORCID iD, where available; and
  • corresponding author information.

Author affiliations should reflect the institution with which the author was affiliated when the research was conducted or the manuscript was prepared, as appropriate.

Abstract

The abstract should provide a concise summary of the manuscript.

For Research Articles, the abstract should normally identify:

  • background or research problem;
  • objective;
  • methodology or approach;
  • principal findings or arguments; and
  • conclusion or implications.

The abstract should be understandable without requiring readers to consult the full article.

Keywords

Provide 3–6 keywords that accurately represent the main concepts, legal issues, research area, or subject matter of the article.

Avoid using terms that are already unnecessarily repetitive of the title.

Introduction

The Introduction should establish:

  • the background and context of the research;
  • the research problem;
  • relevant scholarly debate;
  • the research gap;
  • the objective or research question; and
  • the contribution of the article.

The research question or objective should be clearly identifiable.

Literature Review / Theoretical Framework

Where applicable, the manuscript should critically engage with relevant literature, legal scholarship, theories, concepts, and previous research.

The literature review should demonstrate the article's relationship to existing scholarship and identify the contribution made by the present study.

Methodology

The methodology should clearly explain how the research was conducted.

Depending on the research design, this may include:

  • doctrinal/legal research methods;
  • normative legal approaches;
  • statutory approaches;
  • conceptual approaches;
  • case approaches;
  • comparative approaches;
  • socio-legal methods;
  • empirical research methods;
  • qualitative or quantitative approaches; or
  • interdisciplinary methods.

Authors should provide sufficient information to allow readers to understand and assess the research process.

Where applicable, authors should disclose ethical approval, research participants, data sources, sampling methods, analytical procedures, and relevant limitations.

Results / Findings

Research findings should be presented clearly and logically.

Authors should distinguish factual or empirical findings from interpretation and argument where appropriate.

Discussion

The Discussion should critically interpret the findings and relate them to relevant scholarship, legal principles, theoretical frameworks, policy debates, or practical implications.

The discussion should demonstrate the scholarly contribution of the article rather than merely repeat the results.

Conclusion

The Conclusion should directly address the research question or objectives.

It should summarize the principal contribution of the article and, where appropriate, identify implications, recommendations, limitations, or directions for future research.

References

All works cited in the manuscript must appear in the reference list, and all references listed must be cited in the manuscript.

Authors should ensure that references are accurate, complete, and consistently formatted.

Authors are encouraged to use recent and relevant scholarly sources, while recognizing that seminal or authoritative legal sources may be necessary depending on the subject.

8. Legal Citations

Because the journal focuses on sports law and justice, authors must ensure the accuracy and traceability of legal authorities.

Legal citations should accurately identify, where applicable:

  • cases and judicial decisions;
  • arbitral awards;
  • statutes;
  • regulations;
  • treaties;
  • institutional rules;
  • court or tribunal decisions;
  • official reports; and
  • other authoritative legal materials.

Authors must independently verify all legal authorities.

Particular care should be taken when using AI-assisted research tools because AI systems may generate inaccurate or fabricated legal citations.

9. Tables

Tables should:

  • be numbered consecutively;
  • have a concise and informative title;
  • be referred to in the text;
  • use consistent formatting; and
  • identify the source where applicable.

Authors should not reproduce copyrighted tables without appropriate permission where permission is required.

Tables should contain substantive information and should not unnecessarily duplicate information already presented in the text.

10. Figures, Images, and Other Visual Materials

Figures, charts, photographs, diagrams, and other visual materials should be clear and relevant to the manuscript.

Each figure should:

  • be numbered consecutively;
  • have an appropriate caption;
  • be referred to in the manuscript; and
  • identify its source where applicable.

Authors are responsible for obtaining permission for copyrighted visual materials where required.

11. Footnotes and Endnotes

Footnotes may be used where appropriate for clarification, legal authorities, additional information, or references, according to the journal's required citation style.

Authors should avoid excessive footnotes that interrupt the readability of the manuscript.

12. Citation and Referencing

Authors must accurately cite all sources used in the manuscript.

The journal may require a specific citation and referencing style, which should be followed consistently.

Authors should:

  • cite original sources where reasonably possible;
  • avoid unnecessary citation;
  • verify every reference;
  • ensure consistency between in-text citations or footnotes and the reference list; and
  • provide DOI information where available.

Authors should not manipulate citations to increase citation counts or journal metrics.

13. Research Ethics

Research involving human participants, personal data, vulnerable groups, or other ethically sensitive matters must comply with applicable ethical and legal requirements.

Where applicable, authors should provide information concerning:

  • ethics committee or institutional approval;
  • informed consent;
  • consent for publication;
  • confidentiality and anonymization; and
  • relevant data protection measures.

14. Data Availability

Authors are encouraged to provide appropriate information regarding the availability of research data, materials, analytical procedures, or other supporting resources.

Where data cannot be publicly shared because of privacy, confidentiality, legal, contractual, or ethical restrictions, authors should explain the relevant limitation where appropriate.

Authors must not disclose confidential or personally identifiable information without an appropriate legal and ethical basis.

15. Artificial Intelligence and AI-Assisted Tools

The journal permits responsible use of AI-assisted technologies, subject to its Artificial Intelligence Policy.

AI tools may be used for purposes such as:

  • language improvement;
  • grammar and spelling correction;
  • translation;
  • formatting;
  • coding assistance; and
  • other limited editorial or technical assistance.

AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors.

Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and legality of their manuscripts.

Where AI has been used substantially to generate or develop manuscript content, analysis, code, images, or other substantive material, authors must disclose the nature and extent of the use in accordance with the journal's AI policy.

Authors must independently verify all AI-assisted information, particularly:

  • legal authorities;
  • case citations;
  • statutes and regulations;
  • quotations;
  • references;
  • factual claims; and
  • research findings.

Authors must not use AI to fabricate data, references, quotations, legal authorities, or research findings.

16. Conflict of Interest

Authors must disclose any financial, professional, institutional, personal, or other interests that could reasonably be perceived as influencing the research or its interpretation.

If no relevant conflict exists, authors should provide an appropriate declaration according to the journal's submission requirements.

17. Funding Statement

Authors should disclose financial support for the research and/or publication where applicable.

The funding statement should identify the funding organization and, where relevant, the grant or project number.

If the research received no external funding, authors may state this clearly.

18. Acknowledgments

Individuals who contributed to the research but do not meet the criteria for authorship may be acknowledged with their permission.

Authors should not use acknowledgments to imply authorship or endorsement where none exists.

19. Authorship and Contributions

All listed authors must have made substantial scholarly contributions to the work and must approve the final manuscript.

Where required, authors may be asked to provide a statement describing individual contributions.

The journal does not permit guest authorship, honorary authorship, or ghost authorship.

Changes to the author list after submission require justification and agreement from all affected authors and may require editorial approval.

20. Publication Ethics

Authors must comply with the journal's Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement.

The journal does not tolerate:

  • plagiarism;
  • fabrication;
  • falsification;
  • duplicate publication;
  • redundant publication;
  • inappropriate authorship;
  • citation manipulation;
  • peer-review manipulation; or
  • other forms of research or publication misconduct.

Suspected misconduct may be investigated in accordance with applicable publication-ethics procedures.

21. Plagiarism and Similarity Screening

All manuscripts may undergo similarity screening.

The journal does not use a similarity percentage as the sole basis for determining plagiarism.

Editors assess the nature, source, context, extent, and significance of overlapping material.

Authors are responsible for properly citing quotations, paraphrases, ideas, data, images, and other materials obtained from external sources.

22. Peer Review

Eligible manuscripts are evaluated through the journal's peer-review process.

The journal generally uses double-blind peer review for scholarly research articles.

Authors should ensure that the manuscript file intended for anonymous peer review does not unnecessarily reveal their identity.

Reviewers are expected to provide objective, confidential, constructive, and evidence-based assessments.

23. Revision

When revision is requested, authors should submit:

  1. a revised manuscript; and
  2. a response to reviewers explaining how each substantive comment has been addressed.

Where a suggestion is not adopted, authors should provide a clear scholarly justification.

Revised manuscripts may be returned to the original reviewers or evaluated by the editor as appropriate.

24. Editorial Decision

The possible editorial decisions include:

  • Accept;
  • Minor Revision;
  • Major Revision;
  • Reject and Resubmit; or
  • Reject.

The Editor-in-Chief or designated editor has final responsibility for the editorial decision.

Payment of an APC does not influence acceptance or editorial decisions.

25. Publication and Proofreading

Accepted manuscripts may undergo copyediting, typesetting, formatting, metadata preparation, DOI registration, and other production processes before publication.

Authors may be asked to review proofs before publication.

Proofreading should focus primarily on identifying production errors and factual or typographical mistakes.

Substantive changes to the manuscript after acceptance require editorial approval.

26. Copyright and Licensing

Authors retain copyright of their published articles.

The journal does not require authors to transfer copyright.

All articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license unless otherwise stated for specific third-party materials.

The CC BY 4.0 license permits sharing, redistribution, adaptation, and commercial reuse provided appropriate attribution is given and the license requirements are followed.

27. Open Access

The journal provides immediate open access to published articles.

Readers may access the published content without subscription or pay-per-view charges.

Authors may also archive and disseminate their published articles through legitimate repositories and other lawful channels without an embargo period.

28. Article Processing Charge

The journal charges an Article Processing Charge (APC) of IDR 5,000,000 per accepted article.

There is no submission fee.

The APC is charged only after formal acceptance and does not influence peer review or editorial decisions.

29. Archiving and Deposit

Authors may deposit the published Version of Record in institutional, subject, national, or other legitimate repositories immediately after publication.

No embargo period applies.

Authors are encouraged to include the article DOI and full citation when depositing or sharing their work.

30. Complaints and Appeals

Authors may submit legitimate complaints or appeals concerning editorial decisions, peer review, publication practices, or ethical matters.

Complaints and appeals should provide sufficient information and supporting evidence where appropriate.

The journal will handle complaints and appeals fairly, confidentially, and independently as reasonably possible.

31. Corrections and Retractions

Authors have a responsibility to notify the journal promptly if they discover a significant error in their published article.

Depending on the circumstances, the journal may publish:

  • a correction;
  • an expression of concern;
  • a retraction; or
  • another appropriate post-publication notice.

The journal is committed to maintaining the integrity and reliability of the scholarly record.

Submission Preparation Checklist

Before submitting a manuscript to Indonesian Sports Justice Review, authors should confirm that all of the following requirements have been satisfied:

General Requirements

  •  The manuscript falls within the scope of Indonesian Sports Justice Review.
  •  The manuscript is original and has not been published previously in substantially the same form.
  •  The manuscript is not currently under consideration by another journal.
  •  All authors have approved the final manuscript and its submission.
  •  The corresponding author has been clearly identified.
  •  All authors' names and institutional affiliations are accurate.
  •  ORCID iDs have been provided where available.

Manuscript Preparation

  •  The manuscript follows the journal's prescribed template and formatting requirements.
  •  The title accurately reflects the content of the manuscript.
  •  The abstract clearly summarizes the purpose, methodology or approach, principal findings/arguments, and conclusion where applicable.
  •  Appropriate keywords have been provided.
  •  Headings and subheadings are clearly organized.
  •  Tables and figures are appropriately numbered and cited in the text.
  •  All figures, tables, and visual materials are of suitable quality.
  •  All third-party materials have appropriate attribution and permission where required.

Citations and References

  •  All sources are properly cited.
  •  All cited sources appear in the reference list where applicable.
  •  All references listed are cited in the manuscript where applicable.
  •  References have been checked for accuracy and completeness.
  •  DOI information has been included where available.
  •  Legal authorities and citations have been independently verified.
  •  No citations have been added solely to manipulate citation metrics.

Ethics and Integrity

  •  The manuscript does not contain plagiarism or inappropriate text reuse.
  •  Any reused material has been appropriately cited and disclosed.
  •  Previous publications or related manuscripts have been disclosed where relevant.
  •  Research involving human participants complies with applicable ethical requirements.
  •  Ethical approval and informed consent information has been provided where applicable.
  •  Conflicts of interest have been disclosed.
  •  Funding sources have been disclosed where applicable.
  •  All authors meet the journal's authorship requirements.
  •  Any contributors who do not qualify for authorship are appropriately acknowledged.

Artificial Intelligence

  •  Any substantive use of AI-assisted tools has been disclosed in accordance with the journal's AI Policy.
  •  No AI system has been listed as an author or co-author.
  •  AI-generated information, references, quotations, legal authorities, and factual claims have been independently verified.
  •  AI has not been used to fabricate or manipulate data, references, findings, or legal authorities.
  •  Confidential or sensitive manuscript/research information has not been improperly submitted to external AI systems.

Anonymous Peer Review

  •  The manuscript prepared for double-blind peer review does not unnecessarily identify the authors.
  •  Author names, affiliations, acknowledgments, and other identifying information have been removed from the anonymous manuscript file where required.
  •  Self-references have been presented appropriately and do not unnecessarily reveal author identity.

Submission and Declarations

  •  All required submission metadata has been completed accurately.
  •  The correct manuscript file has been uploaded.
  •  Any required supplementary files have been uploaded.
  •  The corresponding author's contact information is accurate.
  •  The author has read and agrees to the journal's publication policies.
  •  The author understands that the APC is IDR 5,000,000 per accepted article.
  •  The author understands that publication decisions are independent of APC payment.
  •  The author agrees to publication under the CC BY 4.0 license.
  •  The author understands that copyright remains with the author(s).

Author Declaration

By submitting a manuscript to Indonesian Sports Justice Review, the corresponding author confirms on behalf of all authors that the information provided during submission is accurate and that the manuscript complies with the journal's Author Guidelines, Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement, Plagiarism Prevention Policy, Copyright and Licensing Policy, Artificial Intelligence Policy, and other applicable journal policies.
