Copyrights and Licensing Policy
The Indonesian Journal of Defence, Security and Strategic Studies is committed to protecting authors' intellectual property rights while facilitating the broad dissemination, accessibility, and responsible reuse of published scholarly work.
The journal operates under a Gold Open Access model. Authors retain copyright of their published articles, while articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) licence.
1. Copyright Ownership
Copyright of articles published in the Indonesian Journal of Defence, Security and Strategic Studies remains with the author(s).
Authors do not transfer copyright ownership to the journal or publisher as a condition of publication.
By accepting publication, authors grant the journal a non-exclusive right to publish, reproduce, distribute, communicate, archive, and make the article publicly available as the official version of record.
This publishing right enables the journal to disseminate and preserve the article while allowing authors to retain ownership of their intellectual property.
2. Author Rights
Authors retain the right to use, share, distribute, and reuse their published work, subject to the terms of the applicable Creative Commons licence.
Authors may, without requesting additional permission from the journal:
-
share the published article on personal websites;
-
deposit the published article in institutional or subject repositories;
-
distribute the article through academic networks;
-
use the article for teaching and educational purposes;
-
include the article in a thesis or dissertation;
-
incorporate the article or substantial portions of it into a subsequent scholarly work;
-
reuse figures, tables, and other original material created by the authors, subject to appropriate attribution; and
-
otherwise reuse or adapt the article in accordance with the CC BY 4.0 licence.
Authors should provide appropriate acknowledgment of the original publication and, where available, include the article's DOI when sharing or reusing the work.
3. Creative Commons Licence
All articles published by the journal are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) licence, unless a different licence is explicitly indicated for specific third-party material.
Under the CC BY 4.0 licence, users may:
-
Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format; and
-
Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, including commercial purposes.
These permissions are granted provided that users:
-
give appropriate credit to the original author(s);
-
provide an appropriate attribution to the source;
-
provide a link to the CC BY 4.0 licence;
-
indicate whether changes were made; and
-
do not imply that the author(s) or the journal endorses the reuse or adaptation.
4. Attribution Requirements
Any reuse of an article or substantial portion of an article should provide appropriate attribution.
An attribution should, where reasonably possible, include:
-
the name(s) of the author(s);
-
the title of the article;
-
the journal title;
-
publication year and relevant bibliographic information;
-
the article's DOI or persistent identifier, where available;
-
a statement that the material is licensed under CC BY 4.0; and
-
an indication of any modifications made to the original material.
5. Third-Party Material
Not all material appearing within a published article is necessarily owned by the author(s).
Where an article contains third-party material, including photographs, figures, tables, maps, datasets, illustrations, or other copyrighted content, the applicable rights and licensing conditions should be clearly identified where necessary.
Third-party material is not automatically covered by the article's CC BY 4.0 licence if the relevant rights are held by another party.
Users who wish to reuse third-party material are responsible for determining whether additional permission is required and obtaining permission from the relevant copyright holder where necessary.
6. Author Responsibility for Copyright Clearance
Authors are responsible for ensuring that manuscripts submitted to the journal do not infringe the copyright, intellectual property, privacy, or other legal rights of third parties.
Where authors reproduce or adapt material owned by others, they must:
-
provide appropriate attribution;
-
comply with applicable licensing requirements;
-
obtain permission where required; and
-
provide evidence of permission to the journal when requested.
The journal may request clarification or documentation concerning the rights status of third-party material before publication.
7. Previously Published Material
Authors must disclose any material in the submitted manuscript that has previously been published or distributed elsewhere.
This includes, where relevant:
-
conference papers;
-
working papers;
-
preprints;
-
book chapters;
-
reports;
-
theses and dissertations;
-
datasets; and
-
previously published articles.
The existence of prior dissemination does not automatically prevent publication, but authors must ensure that the submitted manuscript does not constitute duplicate or redundant publication and that all relevant rights and sources are properly disclosed.
8. Preprints
Authors may share or deposit pre-publication versions of their manuscripts in appropriate repositories or preprint platforms, subject to applicable policies and ethical considerations.
If a manuscript previously available as a preprint is subsequently published by the journal, authors are encouraged to update the preprint record with the citation and DOI of the final published article.
The published version of record should be clearly distinguished from earlier versions.
9. Institutional and Repository Deposit
Authors may deposit the published version of their article in institutional, subject-based, national, or other appropriate repositories without an embargo.
Authors are encouraged to link repository copies to the official version of record on the journal website and to include the article DOI.
10. Moral Rights
Nothing in the CC BY 4.0 licence or this policy is intended to waive or otherwise restrict applicable moral rights or other rights that cannot legally be waived.
Authors retain their rights to be appropriately identified as the creators of their work and to object to uses that would violate applicable law.
11. Commercial Reuse
The CC BY 4.0 licence permits commercial reuse of published articles, provided that the terms of the licence are respected and appropriate attribution is provided.
The journal does not require separate permission or additional licensing fees for uses that are permitted under CC BY 4.0.
Commercial users must not imply that the authors, Editorial Board, journal, or publisher endorses their products, services, interpretations, or adaptations.
12. Corrections, Retractions, and the Version of Record
The journal maintains the integrity of the published version of record.
If a published article requires correction, expression of concern, or retraction, the journal will take appropriate editorial action while maintaining a transparent scholarly record.
Copyright ownership remains with the authors unless otherwise required by applicable law or a specific legal arrangement.
Retraction does not automatically remove the original article from the scholarly record. Where appropriate, the article will remain accessible with a clear retraction notice and appropriate metadata.
13. Copyright Infringement Concerns
Concerns regarding possible copyright infringement or unauthorized use of material published by the journal should be submitted to the Editorial Office with sufficient information and supporting evidence.
The journal will assess credible complaints and may take appropriate action, including requesting clarification, correcting attribution, removing infringing material where legally required, or issuing an editorial notice.
14. AI-Generated and AI-Assisted Content
Authors remain responsible for determining whether AI-generated or AI-assisted material incorporated into a manuscript raises copyright, licensing, attribution, privacy, or other intellectual property concerns.
The use of generative AI does not transfer responsibility for copyright compliance to the journal.
Authors must not knowingly submit AI-generated material that reproduces protected material without appropriate authorization or attribution.
Where AI-generated images, figures, text, datasets, or other materials are included in a manuscript, authors must comply with the journal's Artificial Intelligence Policy and disclose material AI use where required.
15. Copyright and Publication Agreement
As part of the publication process, authors may be required to confirm that:
-
they have the authority to publish the submitted work;
-
the manuscript is original and does not infringe the rights of others;
-
all authors have approved the final manuscript;
-
necessary permissions for third-party material have been obtained;
-
relevant sources have been properly acknowledged; and
-
they agree to publication under the applicable CC BY 4.0 licence.
The publication agreement does not transfer copyright ownership from the authors to the journal.
16. Relationship with Open Access Policy
This Copyright and Licensing Policy should be read together with the journal's Open Access Policy.
The journal's publishing model is based on:
-
immediate and free access for readers;
-
copyright retention by authors;
-
publication under the CC BY 4.0 licence;
-
no embargo on access or repository deposit; and
-
transparent Article Processing Charges as specified in the journal's Fees and APC Policy.
17. Policy Compliance
Authors, readers, and third parties are expected to comply with the terms of the CC BY 4.0 licence and applicable copyright and intellectual property laws.
The journal reserves the right to update this policy when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, licensing standards, scholarly publishing practices, or international best practices.
Any substantive changes to this policy will be communicated through the journal's official website.
