Copyrights and Licensing Policy

Contemporary Issues on Indonesian Human Rights Law and Policy fully recognizes and protects the intellectual property rights of authors. The journal adopts an author-retained copyright model, under which authors retain full copyright ownership of their published works without any restriction or transfer of copyright to the journal, publisher, or any third party.

All articles published by the journal are made available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0).

1. Author Retains Copyright

Authors retain full and unrestricted copyright ownership of their original scholarly work published in Contemporary Issues on Indonesian Human Rights Law and Policy.

The journal does not require authors to transfer, assign, or surrender copyright as a condition of publication.

Authors retain all rights in their work, including the right to:

  • Reproduce the work;
  • Distribute the work;
  • Share and communicate the work;
  • Deposit the work in repositories;
  • Include the work in a thesis, dissertation, book, or other scholarly publication;
  • Use the work for teaching and educational purposes;
  • Create derivative works;
  • Translate or authorize translations of the work;
  • License the work to third parties;
  • Reuse the work in subsequent publications; and
  • Exercise any other rights available to the copyright holder under applicable law.

The publication of an article in the journal does not constitute a transfer of copyright ownership to the journal or publisher.

2. License to the Journal

By submitting and publishing a manuscript, authors grant the journal a non-exclusive right to publish and make the article publicly available as part of the journal's scholarly publication.

This publishing right is limited to the activities necessary for:

  • Publication of the article;
  • Online dissemination;
  • Distribution through scholarly communication channels;
  • Digital archiving and preservation;
  • Indexing and abstracting;
  • Metadata dissemination;
  • Assignment and maintenance of persistent identifiers such as DOI; and
  • Maintenance of the journal's scholarly record.

This publishing arrangement does not transfer copyright ownership from the author to the journal or publisher.

3. Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License

All articles published by the journal are licensed under the:

Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0).

Under CC BY 4.0, anyone may:

  • Copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format;
  • Remix, transform, and build upon the material;
  • Use the material for commercial purposes; and
  • Use the material for non-commercial purposes,

provided that appropriate attribution is given to the original author(s).

No additional permission from the journal is required for uses that are permitted under the CC BY 4.0 license.

4. Attribution Requirements

Any person or organization reusing material published by the journal must provide appropriate attribution.

Attribution should include, where reasonably practicable:

  • The name(s) of the author(s);
  • The title of the article;
  • The name of the journal;
  • The year of publication;
  • The relevant volume and issue;
  • DOI or other persistent identifier, where available;
  • A link to the original publication; and
  • A link to the CC BY 4.0 license.

Users must also indicate if changes have been made to the original material.

Attribution must not suggest that the original author or the journal endorses the reuse or modification unless such endorsement has been expressly granted.

5. No Additional Restrictions

The journal does not impose additional contractual restrictions on the reuse of articles beyond the conditions of the CC BY 4.0 license.

The journal does not require users to:

  • Obtain additional permission from the journal for uses permitted by CC BY 4.0;
  • Pay additional licensing fees to the journal for permitted reuse;
  • Limit reuse to non-commercial purposes;
  • Obtain separate permission for repository deposit; or
  • Enter into an additional licensing agreement with the journal for permitted uses.

Any restrictions applicable to third-party materials remain the responsibility of the relevant rights holder.

6. Author's Freedom to Reuse and Re-Publish

Because authors retain copyright without restriction, authors may reuse their published work in other scholarly contexts, subject to applicable academic, legal, and ethical requirements.

Authors may, for example:

  • Incorporate the article into a dissertation or thesis;
  • Reuse material in a scholarly book or edited volume;
  • Develop the article into a subsequent research publication;
  • Translate the article;
  • Create derivative or adapted versions;
  • Share the article through institutional repositories;
  • Upload the article to personal or academic websites;
  • Distribute copies to students or colleagues; and
  • License the work separately to third parties.

Authors should provide appropriate acknowledgment of the original journal publication when reusing the work.

7. Repository and Self-Archiving

Authors have unrestricted permission to deposit and share the published version of their article in legitimate repositories and scholarly platforms.

No embargo period applies.

Authors may deposit their published article in:

  • Institutional repositories;
  • University repositories;
  • Subject repositories;
  • National repositories;
  • Research repositories;
  • Personal academic websites; and
  • Other appropriate scholarly platforms.

Repository copies should retain the original bibliographic information and attribution to the journal where reasonably practicable.

8. Commercial Reuse

CC BY 4.0 permits commercial reuse of published articles.

Commercial entities, publishers, researchers, educational institutions, policymakers, and other users may reuse, reproduce, distribute, or adapt the material for commercial or non-commercial purposes, provided that the requirements of the CC BY 4.0 license are satisfied.

The journal does not require additional permission or payment for uses already permitted under the CC BY 4.0 license.

9. Translation and Adaptation

Articles may be translated, adapted, remixed, or otherwise transformed under the CC BY 4.0 license.

Users undertaking such activities must:

  • Credit the original author(s);
  • Identify the original publication;
  • Provide a link to the original work where reasonably practicable;
  • Provide a link to the CC BY 4.0 license; and
  • Clearly indicate that the material has been translated, adapted, or otherwise modified.

A translation or adaptation must not be presented as the original version of the article.

10. Third-Party Materials

The author's copyright in the article does not necessarily extend to materials owned by third parties.

Where an article contains third-party material, including photographs, figures, tables, images, datasets, archival materials, or previously copyrighted text, the licensing status of such material must be determined separately.

Third-party material is not automatically covered by the CC BY 4.0 license where the relevant rights are owned by another party.

Authors are responsible for obtaining necessary permissions for third-party material before publication.

Where applicable, exclusions from the CC BY 4.0 license will be identified in the published article.

11. Moral Rights

The journal respects the moral rights of authors.

Nothing in the journal's copyright or licensing policy is intended to waive or restrict moral rights that are recognized and protected under applicable law.

Users must not falsely attribute modified or derivative material to the original author or imply the author's endorsement of modifications without permission.

12. Copyright and Open Access

The journal operates an immediate open access publishing model.

Copyright ownership remains with the author, while the published article is made freely available under CC BY 4.0.

Accordingly:

Copyright: Author retains full copyright without restriction.

Access: Immediate and free open access.

License: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0).

Embargo: None.

Repository Deposit: Permitted without restriction.

Commercial Reuse: Permitted under CC BY 4.0.

13. Special Issues

The same copyright and licensing conditions apply to all articles published in:

  • Regular issues;
  • Special Issues;
  • Conference-based Special Issues;
  • Invited articles;
  • Review articles; and
  • Other scholarly contributions published by the journal.

Guest Editors, Editorial Board members, conference organizers, or affiliated institutions do not acquire copyright ownership in an author's manuscript merely through participation in the editorial or publication process.

14. Copyright and Peer Review

Copyright ownership remains with the author throughout the submission, peer review, revision, acceptance, and publication process.

Peer reviewers, editors, and Guest Editors must respect the confidentiality and intellectual property rights associated with unpublished manuscripts.

No unpublished manuscript may be reproduced, distributed, or used for personal or professional advantage without appropriate authorization.

15. Copyright and Publication Ethics

Retention of copyright does not affect the author's obligations concerning:

  • Originality;
  • Proper attribution;
  • Plagiarism prevention;
  • Research integrity;
  • Authorship;
  • Conflicts of interest;
  • Ethical research conduct; and
  • Accurate citation.

Authors remain responsible for ensuring that the work does not infringe the rights of others.

16. Copyright Infringement

Any allegation of copyright infringement involving an article published by the journal will be assessed promptly and fairly.

Where credible evidence of infringement is identified, the journal may take appropriate action, including:

  • Requesting clarification from the author;
  • Requesting corrective action;
  • Publishing a correction or clarification;
  • Removing or replacing infringing material where appropriate;
  • Temporarily restricting access where legally necessary; or
  • Taking other measures necessary to protect the rights of affected parties and the integrity of the scholarly record.

17. Copyright Notice

Each published article will display a copyright and licensing statement substantially in the following form:

© [Year] The Author(s). This article is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0).

The copyright notice confirms that copyright remains with the author(s).

18. Commitment to Author Rights

Contemporary Issues on Indonesian Human Rights Law and Policy is committed to a publishing model in which authors maintain full ownership and control of their intellectual property while their research is made openly available to the global scholarly community.

The journal therefore adopts the following core principles:

  • Authors retain full copyright.
  • Copyright is not transferred to the journal or publisher.
  • Authors retain their rights without restriction.
  • Articles are immediately open access.
  • Articles are published under CC BY 4.0.
  • Commercial and non-commercial reuse is permitted subject to attribution.
  • Authors may freely share and deposit their published work.
  • No embargo is imposed on author self-archiving.

This policy is intended to maximize the dissemination, accessibility, reuse, and impact of scholarly research while fully recognizing authors as the owners of their intellectual contributions.
