Abstract

Art has long played a significant role in Indonesia’s struggles with historical injustices, particularly those related to the colonial era, the 1965-66 anti-communist purge, and more recent human rights violations. This paper explores the role of art in addressing these painful legacies, focusing on how artistic practices serve as a platform for truth-telling and reconciliation. By examining works of visual art, literature, performance, and film, the paper discusses how Indonesian artists have navigated sensitive historical topics, providing space for healing and dialogue. The paper also considers the ethical implications of using art in the service of reconciliation and how artistic expressions contribute to or complicate national efforts to confront past injustices.
