Abstract

In Indonesia, art has long been a powerful tool for resistance and social change, serving as a vehicle for marginalized voices and challenging dominant political and social structures. This paper explores the role of Indonesian art in social justice movements, from the authoritarian era under Suharto to contemporary struggles for democracy, environmental justice, and ethnic rights. It examines how artists have used various forms of expression—visual art, theater, music, and literature—to address issues of inequality, human rights violations, and political oppression. By analyzing specific case studies of art activism and the impact of socially engaged art on public awareness and policy change, the paper underscores the transformative power of art in advancing social justice in Indonesia.
