Inclusive Tourism: Ensuring Access for People with Disabilities in Indonesia’s Tourist Destinations

Tourism in Indonesia has witnessed rapid growth in recent years, yet accessibility for people with disabilities remains a significant challenge. This paper explores the barriers that individuals with disabilities face when accessing popular tourist destinations in Indonesia, including issues related to physical infrastructure, social stigma, and legal protections. Through a combination of qualitative interviews with disabled tourists and an analysis of current accessibility policies, the study identifies key obstacles in Indonesia’s tourism sector. The research shows that while there have been some improvements in certain destinations, such as Bali, broader national initiatives to promote inclusivity in tourism are still lacking. The paper critiques the role of government policies and private sector involvement in improving accessibility, arguing that insufficient enforcement of accessibility standards and a lack of awareness among industry stakeholders perpetuate inequality. It concludes by recommending that Indonesia adopt more comprehensive, enforceable accessibility standards, integrate disability awareness into tourism training, and engage in public-private partnerships to improve accessibility in both urban and rural destinations.
